The Linhay – St Minver, North Cornwall

Thank you Alistair Sawday.

We stayed: wood burner; acres of windows and breeze; fresh eggs, local bread and fudge waiting on the counter; rosemary scented shower gel; a mad, but charming visit from the owner's dog, Beetle, every day; OS map ready for walking; bench outside to watch the swallows; when can we go back?

We saw: smugglers coves; salty sea dog shanty singing fishermen in Port Isaac; rolling green hills and burgeoning pink-and-yellow wildflower hedgerows; lots of nautical stripes; Springwatch (swallows, nesting blue tits, rabbits, stag beetle, awol chickens).

We did: everything slowly; cycling down the Camel Trail to Padstow; bbq-ing sea bass and rib eye; farm shop eating; new season strawberries; hard, coastal walking; sauntering to the beach for coffee; reading papers; the obligatory Rick Stein visit (The Cornish Arms - fish and chips); cream teas and cornish pasties; dreaming of Plan B.

I'm thinking: island cycling by day, eating melon, hippy markets, kaftans, sunset cocktails, stepping out onto the sand for breakfast.
